CASE STUDY - SDN ENABLED TOPOLOGY DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION
- Network was designed for a company transitioning from a traditional network infrastructure to an SDN-enabled network
- Strong emphasis on high availability for the Data Center and Campus Network
- Data Center was ACI enabled Data Center Resources were divided into 4 groups:
- Network Appliances, including ISE, DNAC Cluster, APIC Cluster, and WLCs
- System Servers, such as DHCP Servers, DNS Servers, and Active Directory Servers
- Application and Database Servers exclusively used for internal purposes
- Publicly Available Servers, including the Public DNS Server, the Public Company Web Server, and the SMTP Server
- Data Center's security was maintained through the use of Perimeter Firewalls for Public/Internet Traffic and a Data Center Firewall for Campus/WAN Traffic
- These firewalls served as L3OUT peers for DC Leaf Switches
- Network was designed for a company transitioning from a traditional network infrastructure to an SDN-enabled network
- SDA Fabric was designed with multi-layered redundancy, which was present at both the Border and Fusion Router levels
- Strong emphasis on high availability for the Data Center and Campus Network
- SDA Fabric encompassed Wired and Wireless Endpoints, with the wireless network utilizing Fabric-Enabled Wireless
- Branch offices were connected to the Campus/Data Center by implementing a SD-WAN architecture
- SD-WAN Controllers were installed in the cloud, while the SD-WAN underlay transport consisted of three separate Internet Links from three different ISPs, as well as an MPLS link
- Centralized policies were employed to optimize traffic flow across multiple transport channels
Our Consulting Approach
Our methodology is designed to evaluate your existing network architecture, understand your requirements, and provide a comprehensive design and implementation plan. The methodology consists of the following phases:
Phase 1: Planning & Preparation
This phase involves exchanging initial information, planning, and preparing for the project. During this phase, we establish the engagement team, confirm test dates and times, outline the escalation path, and make other necessary arrangements. We also discuss the execution plan, approach, and methodology, and engage with the IT and management teams to identify specific requirements.
Phase 2: Assessment
During this phase, we analyze the current network by gathering information about its L2 and L3 layout. We collaborate with your IT department to understand application traffic flow and access based on the existing infrastructure.
Phase 3: Designing the Network Infrastructure (HLD)
Based on the requirements specified in Phase 1 and findings from Phase 2, in this phase we create a High-Level Design (HLD) document. This document outlines the technologies and methodology used for the project and is presented to the management and IT teams. We conduct meetings to discuss the HLD, and upon approval, proceed to the next phase.
Phase 4: Design & Implementation Plan Review & Approval (LLD)
Following the HLD approval, wedevelop a Low-Level Design (LLD) document detailing the actual deployment steps. The LLD typically includes:
- New proposed L2 & L3 Network Topology Diagrams
- Best practice configuration templates
- Detailed Implementation Plan
- The LLD is presented to the management and IT teams for review and approval. Once approved, we proceed to the implementation phase.
Phase 5: Implementation & Handover
In this phase, we implement the project based on the approved LLD. After thorough testing, we work with the IT and Management Teams for project completion acceptance . A Project Implementation Report, including updated L2 and L3 Network Diagrams, is prepared, followed by the project handover.
Phase 6: Knowledge Transfer Training Sessions
During this phase, we conduct a hands-on workshop that includes both theory and lab work for the IT team on the upgraded network. Additionally, we conduct Knowledge Transfer Training on any new technologies implemented during the project.
